Be Comfortable

It’s so important to choose clothes that you feel comfortable in. When you feel amazing, you look amazing. When you are uncomfortable, it can show in your photos. Others may not notice, but you will, and you want to love your photos, so choose clothes that you feel confident in, can easily move around in and that flatter your body shape!

Top 5 Photo Shoot Styling Tips from 5 Savannah Fashion Experts | 1) Be YOU!

Be You

Style is such a personal aspect of our lives, something that not only affects the way we think and feel about ourselves, but also communicates to the world so much about our individual personalities. It’s so important when preparing for any kind of photoshoot, that you don’t veer too far from the hallmarks of your true personality. It’s very fun to fancy things up a bit or try out bold patterns, etc – just be sure to remain true to yourself and your personal brand. As for classic looks that never disappoint, a fit and flare A-line dress is a universally flattering cut, and for men, custom tailoring is truly the key to rocking any style of shirt or trousers. And when in doubt, black and white anything will always be timeless.

We always get the question: “What do I wear?” So here are some ideas for what to wear for a photo shoot!

For Engagement Portraits

Choose something that makes you feel beautiful and special! Even if it’s just a casual shoot, incorporate a statement accessory that makes you feel special… maybe a fun shoe, a headband, or special piece of jewelry. Don’t be afraid to incorporate textures and prints, as long as they’re in the same color scheme, you’ll be good!

Top 5 Photo Shoot Styling Tips from 5 Savannah Fashion Experts | How to coordinate outfits for Family Portraits that aren't too matchy-matchy, but compliment each other!

For Family Portraits

When you hear “family pictures” do you cringe a little inside? If we are being honest…I do. Coordinating outfits for a group of people can get a little crazy, but that shouldn’t be the first thing you think when you look back on those memories! I am not one to go for the matchy-matchy outfits, and also, everyone in the photo does not need to be wearing the same thing.

Don’t be afraid to play with patterns! I like to pick two people in the group to wear a pattern. Maybe a neutral floral dress for your daughter, and a pinstripe shirt for dad, keep everyone else in neutrals (that does not mean a white shirt and jeans) different shades of tan, grey, and creams all look really nice together. Also, think about the colors that will be in the photo as well, whether that be outside or in your living room. You want to compliment your surroundings, not camouflage into them!

Top 5 Photo Shoot Styling Tips from 5 Savannah Fashion Experts | How to pick out an outfit for your headshots! Don't forget these grooming tips as well!

For Headshots

Grooming!! If you’re investing in an up-close visual of yourself, that represents yourself and brand, invest in some self-care/personal grooming like a fresh hair cut and/or facial! You can freshen up your look with a new or improved color, but even layers (clipper ends) is visually pleasing. For men, this also includes clean lines or a fresh shave.

Fashion for headshots should reflect both your personality and brand. You can easily incorporate both by understanding color theory and how it can affect your mood the day of the shoot or read to anyone who sees the image. Power colors are red and blue, but each has different underlying meanings. Blue tends to be more liberal, while red is very self-assured. Other colors like yellow, purple or green can be used as defined by your personality.

You can also show how bold you are with a little bit of print, but not too much!!! Maybe a printed accessory or a printed top with a coordinating solid layer. The important thing for prints is SCALE. Stick with medium to large prints because tiny prints can blur someone’s vision and cause the image to be a distraction!
